We differentiate the round brilliant from the shapes called “fancy”, such as the princess cut, emerald, oval …and many others.
The round brilliant shape is without doubt the most accomplished one, the one where the study of optimal proportions has been pushed the furthest. It is also the most classical one, the most universal, containing all the symbolism associated with the round shape.
The fancy shapes are generally cheaper than the round shapes, which are more difficult to evaluate; the quality of the proportions and of the cut will strongly influence the price.
Some example of common shapes:
The Princess cut: adapted to jewels created along neat lines. It is a square or rectangular cut, it usually has 76 facets which ensure a strong sparkle. A princess cut is smaller and cheaper than a round brilliant of the same weight. The width of the table demands a good clarity.
The Emerald cut: the Emerald cut enhances the beautiful “transparency” of the diamond. It is a distinguished cut, sober but very “classy”. It requires a diamond of good clarity: the table must be pure or VVS, with possible inclusions on the side.
Oval cut : resolutely modern cut which allies the classicism of the brilliant cut to the elegant femininity of elongated shapes, such as the marquise or the pear.
